Zinc and copper ridge strips are a passive, long-lasting method of moss suppression. Trace metal ions wash down the roof during rainfall, creating an environment where moss spores struggle to germinate.
The mechanism
Rain reacts with the exposed metal at the ridge, releasing trace zinc or copper ions into the runoff. Those ions coat the tile surface below and remain slightly toxic to moss spores. The effect isn't total — moss still germinates in heavily-shaded valleys — but it dramatically slows the return rate.
Zinc vs copper
Zinc is cheaper, works well, and is the standard choice for domestic roofs. Copper is more expensive but offers a longer active life and slightly better performance in high-spore environments. On a typical Nottingham house, zinc is the pragmatic pick.
When to fit
The ideal time to fit ridge strips is immediately after a full roof clean, while access equipment is on site. Fitting adds around £250–£450 to a domestic job and typically extends the visible-clean period by 2–4 years.
When strips don't help much
Roofs with very complex geometry, multiple valleys and heavy tree cover benefit less because the ion runoff doesn't reach every area. In those cases scheduled biocide top-ups are a better investment than strips.
